One of my users sent an email regarding a quote
for our products. The customer is a Government
Defense Agency. Anyway, the customer was not receiving this mail. They in turn sent us a trace report and seems like after a Reverse dns
lookup, the address was pointing to our provider’s domain name; ‘allegiance’.
The agency advised to have our provider change the domanin name to our email server domain name.
I called our provider and asked why this is. They
said it was just an Identification process to let them know that the ip address was theirs. I instructed them to change it to our mail domain name and the customer can now receive out mail.
I have a pix firewall that translate this outside address to my internal mail address. Now I’m concern that I am obviously able to access my mail server from the outside and up comes my webmail, kinda cool, but I’m really concern about security, hackers,etc.. now able to access the same results. Did I just open up a door in my firewall??
Should I have my isp change it back to their domain name?? I’m not sure how to handle this now..
