Security Centre can’t detect anti virus

I am running Windows XP Professional and have recently removed an anti virus software that didn’t work properly and replaced it with another. Now Security Centre does not detect there is an anti virus installed. I have overidden the alert by selecting the option to monitor the anti virus myself, however, I would like to know why this has happened and how to rectify it?
