sending alerts by sms to gsm phones

I am working on a project to capture system alerts and send to system administrators by short messaging service (sms).
I intend to setup an sms gateway but i’m not very clear as to how i can capture the alerts and send.

Does anyone has an idea how i can accomplish this?
