2 users share 10 excel spreadsheets.
8 files work without any problems.
2 files cause 1 user’s PC to lockup excel when that user is attempting to open the file while the file is open and in use by the 2nd user.
Using the Ctrl+Alt+Del to close the program shows that the “File is not responding”
Using the end task facility – excel drops out
Sometimes but not always the file can be accessed by using Start/Documents/filename.xls
Here is a comment by the user of one attempt:
“Today I opened Excel, went to open 2710fe101.xls. It appeared to open, but hung, then a dialogue box appeared saying Excel had performed an illegal function, and then it dropped out completely.
Then I went to Start/Documents and hit 2710fe101.xls and it opened OK.”
On removing the share feature the files do not cause any problems. Both users can individually open, edit and save OK while in the unshared mode.
The files have up to 6 worksheets.
As new worksheets are added they are copied from existing worksheets within the spreadsheet file with data from the source being deleted or retained as necessary and then saved as a new file.
There is some doubt as to whether the files were originally created in excel 97 or an earlier version such as excel 4.0 as the creation date is 08-09-97
