Sorting Footnotes by Author

I have been asked to provide a means of providing endnotes in Word 2000/XP sorted in Author order. This cannot be done easily because changing the numbering messes up all the cross-references.

I could do it using tables of Authorities or Cross-references but this would be rather cumbersome for the users.

Does anyone know of an elegant way of acheiving this as, apparently it is the normal usage in technical journals.
