System malfunctioning

I have a pentium 3 866MMX with Windows 2000with Office 2000. whenever i press a combination of SHIFT (or CTRL, ALT) with another key in any Office package, the cursor will be loading several other programmes (malfunctioning – unstable). i always have to shutdown the system at any point i try this combination.
What could go wrong please?
