Times New Roman+Bold problem

Just recently, when viewing any text either in Word or even Internet Explorer, and the font is Times New Roman AND bold, it is illegible. Completely.
Most letters are plain squares, and thru the whole thing is a something resembling a smudge.
Takeoff bold, and its fine, or change font, and its fine.
Any ideas for the points?
