Toolbar

Just recently, as I logged into a site that I joined, I noticed that there were several odd characters in the toolbar. The site requires you to add your email address. I saw a long a bogus email address [that in fact wasn’t really an address]. After decided to log out, and then in for the second and third time, there weren’t any signs that I used that address in previous log-ins. How was this done?
