Trouble with networking

I have two computers that I am networking through a hub. I have windows xp pro on one and 98se on the other. I ran the network setup software from xp on both machines, but cannot view files across the network. I can see the machine i am on in the network, but not the other machine. What are the basic things I can check to get this working? Do I need to get rid of ipx/spx and netbeui on the 98 machine? Please help.
