Type conversion error – Access

When I am importing an excel spreadsheet into access 2000. I get an type conversion error. I have the field listed as text. It should bring everything in right? It brings in everything without spaces or letters. But when it gets to fields that contact letters and spaces and dashed and sometimes “/” it doesn’t want to. How can I get it to import whatever is in that field???
