update excel cell references if you don’t have access to the original file

We have excel worksheets with payroll information that is linked to other excel spreadsheets. The original spreadsheets with the payroll data (salary, names, etc) are protected and cannot be opened but by a few people. However, the totals from these spreadsheets are linked to other spreadsheets that can be accessed by anyone. I need to be able to open these spreadsheets that anyone can get into and to have the data update from the protected spreadsheets. Is there a way to do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
