What comprises a SQL Server DBA?

by michellil . Updated 20 years, 10 months ago

Hi all,

My question is regarding what makes up the job title of DBA. I am currently working in a SQL Server position, but doing a lot of scripting for reporting purposes. Obviously, this isn’t a DBA position. However, I want to move into that area, as there is no growth in my position, and the money just isn’t there.

What would I need to start concentrating on to make myself ready to pursue a DBA position? Are there resources I should look into, such as textbooks I should read, sites I could investigate?

I have a Bachelors in Computer Information Systems. I also started using my free Launch copies of SQL Server and Visual Studio 2k5 over the holiday weekend, and I have always been comfortable in Query Analyzer and Enterprise Manager, along with Visual Studio 6 (this is my first .Net exposure, not sure if that matters.) My T-SQL skills are very high. I would even venture to say expert-level.

I don’t have any certifications, though I am happy that attending the MS Launch last week got me a voucher for a free cert exam. How important would certs be?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
