Win XP won’t boot after USB tweak…

by jmarchetto . Updated 19 years, 7 months ago

I think I really did it this time. I have still been trying to fix my PC’s issue not recognizing Sandisk USB thumb drives (which I posted here 2-3 weeks ago with NO valid solutions & 2 hours on phone with Sandisk tech support did not warrant anything). Well, digging across the web I found advice on this issue that suggested to boot in Safe Mode, go into Device Manager and delete all USB listings (this would force the PC to reinstall the drivers on the next reboot). Well, I did this but the next reboot has yet to occur. I can get to the log in screen, but the mouse (which is PS2 not USB) does not work, so I can’t get past the WGA popup. (From here I have to do a force shut down b/c it won’t recognize anything). I’ve tried Safe Mode and same issue. Ideally, I’d like to be able to boot to the command prompt and then use rstrui.exe to restore back to a time when my computer happily recognized all thumb drives, including Sandisk. I also tried using a XP boot disk which got me to the same sticking spot.

COMPUTER SPECS: Compaq, Athelon 2300 512 RAM, WIN XP SP2, computer does have USB2.

Thanks in advance for your time.
