Windows Messenger signs out by itself

Windows Messenger (v. 4.7.3), part of service pack II on XP, signs itself out automatically about every ten minutes. However, it continues to indicate it is online until someone tries use it, when it then then says that you can’t send a message b/c you’re not logged on. I’m using Norton Internet Security and Giant Anti-spyware.
