Word 2000 displays hidden info

by tonydee . Updated 23 years, 9 months ago

I’m running Office 2000 on Win 98SE. Word documents open fine if I 2x click on them. However, if I open them from within Word by using File –> Open, the document opens OK, but I also see info that should not be displayed at the end of the file. Theinfo I see is the hidden formatting info, not summary info like creation date, autor, keywords, etc.
This is an example of what I see:
Normal

Normal.dot
Microsoft Word 9.0

It also has paths to the document listed.
This used to work OK. Don’t know what happened. Removed Office and re-installed – same problem.
Reloaded Win98SE over old – nohelp.
Also – if I go to the Help Menu and choose About Word, it displays the proper window, but it also plays the Windows startup sound file.

I’ve worked with Word since the late 80’s and never seen this before.

Any thoughts? Do I need to do a clean install? What really gets me is that the files open OK if 2x click them, but not when opening from inside Word.

I run NAV and it’s updated regularly. Also ran virus check from Symantec’s site and housecall.antivirus.com. Nothing. Norton Win and Disk Doctor fixed stuff. Should be OK now.

Thanks for listening
