Word 2000 problem

Using Word 2000, a customer has managed to get into a situation where the spacebar types a period. I realise that selecting Show/Hide will create this, but on her machine it does it regardless of whether this is set to on or off. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Office and deleting the Normal.dot template. It still does it. Anyone got any ideas what she’s done??
