Word 2002 Performance

I am running Word 2002 on new Gateway PC’s (1.4 Hz, 256 MB RAM, 10/100 Intel NIC) running XP Professional. When I do a File/Open to our default document directory (very large) it takes approx. 40 seconds to display the file list.

Our old Pentium266 machines with 64 MB RAM and Windows 2000 bring up the file listing almost immediately.

I have tried various settings on the network card with no success.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
