Word 97 locking when started up

Word 97 is locking up when starting the application from the start menu or desktop icon on windows 98. I have logged on using the default profile and deleted the normal.dot file and this hasn’t helped. I have also reinstalled word and deleted and recreated the windows profile but this hasn’t helped.
Please help
