Word opens inconsistently in window

Word 2003, Windows XP, service pac 2, Dell GX620

When I open Word from the Quick Launch bar or from the Start menu, it will sometimes open a window (and appears on taskbar as programs normally do). Sometimes it only appears on the Taskbar. Any way I can get it to do one or the other consistently?
