My company uses a HP 4550n laserjet. It is setup so that plain paper is always taken from tray 2 and ‘letterhead’ is always taken from tray 1.
When using Word 2000 on a Windows 98 machine, I can tell Word which printer tray to use for the document, by clicking File>Page setup, selecting the Paper source tab, then selecting the paper type I require. Word will then print to the tray associated with the paper type I have selected. I can set the default tray by clicking Tools>Options and selecting the default tray from the Print tab. If, when printing from Word no paper is present in either tray, the printer will display a message asking me to ‘load xx paper’.
However, using Word 2000 on a Windows 2000 machine, the option to selecta tray does not seem to be present. From the Print dialog box, I can tell Word to print to a different tray by accessing the printer properties and the printer driver can then be configured to print on letterhead paper in tray 1, but doing this eachtime I need to print to that tray is inefficient.
The problem is that the setting does not hold between sessions. Even though Tray 1 letterhead had been selected, the next time the document is printed Word 2000 defaults to Tray 2 plain paper. Theoption to use tray 1 can be setup in the NT Forms tab but if no paper is loaded in tray 1, then the printer will automatically switch to plain paper in tray 2. I know that Word 2000 takes its default paper tray from the options specified in the default printer driver, but would like to know if there is a way to make Word retain printing information specific to the document.
