Apple’s newest MacBook Pro is faster, especially for AI workloads, but that doesn’t automatically make it a must-have upgrade.

The company announced the 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro on Oct. 27, introducing a 12-core CPU, improved graphics and on-device AI performance, and updated wireless connectivity. The laptop starts at $1,999, with preorders opening October 28 and availability beginning November 6.

For professionals and businesses considering an upgrade, the question is whether those improvements offer enough value over the M5, particularly when much of the MacBook Pro’s design and hardware remains familiar.

M6 delivers faster graphics and on-device AI

The biggest change is Apple’s M6 chip, which features a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, each with two more cores than the standard M5.

According to Apple, the M6 delivers up to 30% faster graphics performance and up to 25% faster performance in certain on-device AI workloads compared with the M5. Its Dual 16-core Neural Engine also offers up to 1.9 times the performance of the previous generation.

Those improvements target demanding applications such as 3D rendering, image editing, software development, and local large language models.

Apple provided several workload-specific comparisons against the M5 MacBook Pro:

  • AI processing: Up to 1.3 times faster time to first token when processing LLM prompts.
  • 3D rendering: Up to 1.3 times faster ray-tracing performance in Blender.
  • Software development: Up to 1.3 times faster project builds in Xcode.
  • Image editing: Up to 1.2 times faster processing in Affinity.

These figures come from Apple’s testing, and real-world performance will depend on the application and workload.

The M6 also supports memory bandwidth of up to 170GB/s, with 16GB of unified memory standard and configurations available up to 32GB.

For users running local AI models or handling large creative projects, the added processing power could reduce waiting times. Those working primarily in browsers, email, and standard productivity applications may notice less of a difference.

Wi-Fi 7 arrives, but the design stays familiar

The standard 14-inch MacBook Pro now supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, bringing its wireless connectivity in line with Apple’s higher-end MacBook Pro models.

The change could benefit users with compatible networks and peripherals, although Wi-Fi 7 alone will not guarantee faster internet connections.

Most of the remaining hardware carries over from the previous generation.

The M6 MacBook Pro retains its Liquid Retina XDR display, with up to 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness and an optional nano-texture finish. It also includes a 12MP Center Stage camera, a six-speaker sound system, and support for up to two external displays.

Its ports remain familiar: three Thunderbolt 4 connections, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe 3, and a headphone jack.

That distinction matters for professionals using high-speed storage and docking equipment. Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros already offer Thunderbolt 5, while the standard M6 model continues to use Thunderbolt 4.

The new standard M6 MacBook Pro also retains its Liquid Retina XDR display rather than introducing an OLED touchscreen. Earlier reports about a possible MacBook Pro redesign discussed more substantial display changes, but Apple’s latest announcement does not confirm when or whether those features will arrive in other configurations.

Battery life stays at up to 24 hours

Apple rates the M6 MacBook Pro for up to 24 hours of battery life, matching the headline endurance figure advertised for the previous generation.

Rather than extending battery life beyond the M5, Apple is emphasizing higher performance while maintaining strong power efficiency.

For users upgrading from older Macs, however, the difference could be more noticeable.

Apple claims the new laptop offers up to four additional hours of battery life compared with an M1 MacBook Pro and up to 14 additional hours compared with certain Intel-based models.

The M6 MacBook Pro also supports fast charging, reaching up to 50% battery capacity in approximately 30 minutes with a compatible power adapter.

These are manufacturer estimates, so actual battery life will depend on usage, settings, and workload.

macOS 27 expands Apple’s AI features

The M6 MacBook Pro ships with macOS 27 Golden Gate, which introduces additional AI capabilities across Apple’s operating system.

According to Apple, Siri AI can use personal context to find information across messages, emails, and photos, answer questions, and perform tasks across applications.

The assistant is also integrated into Spotlight and systemwide context menus. Visual Intelligence allows users to ask questions about information displayed on their screens.

Other Apple Intelligence features include Safari tools for organizing tabs and monitoring website changes, natural-language automation in Shortcuts, and AI-assisted photo editing.

For businesses, these capabilities may help employees manage information and automate routine tasks. However, IT teams should review application permissions, data access, and organizational security policies before deploying new AI features broadly.

It’s also worth distinguishing software improvements from hardware upgrades. The operating system brings Siri AI and additional Apple Intelligence capabilities to supported Macs. Users should check whether their existing hardware supports the features they want before buying a new laptop.

Should you upgrade to the M6 MacBook Pro?

For most M5 MacBook Pro owners, the M6 looks more like a performance refresh than an essential upgrade.

Apple’s claimed improvements could benefit developers compiling large projects, creative professionals handling complex media, and users running AI models locally. But for everyday productivity, the gains may be less noticeable.

The case is stronger for people using much older Macs. Apple claims up to 11 times faster graphics and up to 13 times faster AI performance compared with an M1 MacBook Pro in specific tests, alongside potential battery-life improvements.

Businesses planning a hardware refresh should consider whether existing devices are actually limiting employee productivity. IT teams should also evaluate memory requirements, software compatibility, security controls, and the cost of replacing equipment that may still perform adequately.

For individual buyers, the decision comes down to the applications they use most. Someone regularly waiting for code to compile, videos to render, or local AI models to respond may benefit from the M6’s additional performance. Someone whose current MacBook Pro already handles their daily workload comfortably may have little reason to spend another $1,999.

Before upgrading, identify the task your current Mac struggles with and look for independent M6 benchmarks that measure it. If the improvement would save meaningful time, the new MacBook Pro could be worth the investment. If not, keeping your existing laptop may be the better value.

Other news: Apple has also unveiled a redesigned iPad mini, featuring a larger 8.5-inch OLED display, the A20 Pro chip, and IP67 water and dust resistance.
