OpenAI is committing $1 billion in subsidized Daybreak access and support to help cyber defenders protect critical infrastructure and fix flaws faster.

The window for defenders to get ahead of AI-enabled cyberattacks is narrowing.

OpenAI has committed $1 billion in subsidized Daybreak access, training, technical support, and partnerships, targeting the support to be used over the next six months. The global initiative prioritizes resource-constrained defenders protecting water and electricity systems, local governments, community banks, nonprofits, and open-source software.

For IT leaders, Daybreak provides another way to find and fix vulnerabilities faster, either through OpenAI or participating security vendors. However, access to its more sensitive capabilities requires additional verification and oversight.

Eligible state and local governments, critical-infrastructure operators, nonprofits, open-source maintainers, and supporting organizations can register their interest through the Daybreak website for access, training, technical assistance, and other support.

What Daybreak brings

Daybreak offers two access levels. Daybreak Blue supports common defensive work using OpenAI’s mainline models, while Daybreak Red gives approved organizations access to specialized cyber models for more sensitive and technically demanding work.

Given the possibility of misuse of the red teaming AI model, OpenAI provides it as a managed service for enterprises.

The Daybreak models can be accessed in Codex Security via a plugin, cloud, or CLI.

For organizations and security researchers that need Daybreak access, OpenAI requires them to apply for access and be willing to share extended personally identifying information. The company says that this is a protection measure against harmful use of such powerful tools.

Despite the several restrictions that OpenAI has put in place on how and who can use Daybreak, some of its early users have already found it helpful.

“OpenAI complements our existing security stack by powering continuous AI red teaming, prompt hardening, and AI asset management. This is helping us find vulnerabilities at machine speed across text, voice, and images,” said  Dhawal Sharma, EVP, AI Security and Strategic Initiatives, Zscaler.

OpenAI has provided an accessible way in which enterprises can incorporate Daybreak into their applications.

Through the Daybreak Defense Network, OpenAI is working with security companies including Cisco and Okta on product integrations and managed services covering application security, security operations, and AI and agent security.

Partners can provide these services either through product integrations or managed services.

Besides the diverse ecosystem of corporate partners, enterprises are also able to access Daybreak through open-source red teaming tools like Promptfoo to secure their agentic applications. This gives enterprises the flexibility to use the infrastructure they already rely on rather than being vendor-locked.

The $1 billion commitment primarily targets resource-constrained frontline defenders, not enterprises generally. Enterprise security teams can instead evaluate Daybreak through OpenAI or participating vendors, but they should examine what data the tools can access, where human approval is required, and how findings and fixes will be independently verified before deployment.
