100% CPU time on WIn2k

my system runs on WIN2k Professional. i noticed that system is running very slow & i checked with Task manager. am seeing CPU time 100% on some process. first it was with IE & then now its happening with some other applicaitons.

why its taking 100% CPU time & how do i resolve this.
