A customer of mine complained about poor performance of his SBS 4.5 server. I soon learned that the CPU usage regularly rises to 100%, stays that way for a number of seconds, after which it drops to normal levels. The problem reoccurs after (about) 18 seconds.
I?ve tried to locate the source of the problem, but so far I have been unsuccessful. Until now I have discovered the following:
– The process causing the high CPU usage is the ?system? process
– I have tried to break down the system process to identify the program or driver causing the problem, as described in the Microsoft knowledgebase article Q295714. As a result I learned that one specific thread (number 30) is responsible, but unfortunately this thread doesn?t seem to be related to a loaded module.
I have updated the server with all available service packs and most recent device drivers, but this didn?t solve the problem.
