1394 driver

what does the 1394 driver control? I have a Compaq SP700 workstation (Xeon 550) and I keep getting a splat in device manager under network controllers, i try and un-install it then re-install and I get the same splat, the workstation will not connect to the network no matter what, i even tried to go into CMOs and disable it and installed a PCI ethernet card to try and get around it..it will still not remove the splat, and reloads upon every system restart, any ideas???
