16- bit DOS subsystem in Win XP

I am trying to install some applications and recieve the error “16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem path to the program you are trying to start or install C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system is not sutible for running MS-DOS and MS windows applications. Choose close to terminate this program”
I have tried to use the fix on the MS web site and am still having the problem, does anyone know a solution. I am running Win XP Pro in NTFS.
