I’m working with a Gateway 475 Desktop, all stock except for a LAN card.
When doing a clean install of WinXP Pro the computer for some reason felt like installing two floppy dis controllers. The sweet part is botrh of these controllers use the same resources and cause a conflict, because of this conflict the floppy disk drive is not recognized.
Things Tried (and didn’t work):
1) Diasble 1 Controller, no avail, still a conflict
2) Uninstall one controller. Fantastic! Floppy is regonized and installed. I reboot and computer istalls new hardware, needs another reboot. Upon second reboot the second controller is back with the same problem.
3)I’d love to change the resources but all options are greyed out so I cannot change off the automatic settings. I hope there is a way to get around this.
4) Driver for controller installs from fdc.sys file in the windows/system32 folder. I renamed a text file ‘fdc.sys’ and moved the proper file. Rebooted and both floppy controlers still install.
5) Nothing particualr in the BIOS, The only thing I can do is diable the floppy all together, of course then no floppy controllers reinstall themselves after I unistall them.
6) I’ve also tried swapping out ribbons, drives, and placing the drives on differet spots on the ribbon.
Blessings to those who dare to respond!
