2000 Server cannot join domain

The problem that i have is that a backup domain controller (2000) crashed and that i had to reload it. I’m installing it with the original name but during the installation the setup tells me that the server name is already in use. I have removed it from the 2000 domain controller (with ADSI edit and Active Directory sites and services). The only reason that i can think of why it doesn’t want to take the name is because the server wasn’t de-moted. Can anyone please help.
