512 Megabyte Barrier

Have a Athlon 1.2
512 Meg
60+ Gig Hard Drive..
when I add second 512 Megs I get a windows protection error on boot…tried with memory of lesser capacity..same error…Board is stated to support 1.5 gig of memory.
have heard it may be a vcache setting problem?
Help please
