98 Network Login

I running a school network consisting of 50 pc’s running 95+98 in a W2K AD domain, on one single subnet. Almost at random clients report “password wrong or no server available” when attempting to log on. Repeated attempts, on the same machine, oftenresult in successful login. This occurs even when there is minimal network traffic. I suspect its hardware but not sure. Any ideas greatly appreciated
