98 won’t remember printer default

in order to use either of my printers I have to undefault it then my it default again. If i change applications I have to do this all over again. I have tried removing both sets of drivers then reinstalling them again,doesn’t help.computer bio; P11400,win98,HPLaserjet 4L,epson850 inkjet,latest drivers for both,256mgs memory
