98/XP upgrade can’t access “my Computer”

by baegis . Updated 24 years, 1 month ago

I upgraded a friends Win98 PC with XP. Everything went fine and all his hardware worked straight off. His hard drive was partioned in 2 halfs as C: & D: each 15 GigBytes.

Problem 1. He had messed around previously and the computer name in Win98 was not repeatable. Not knowing this when I upgraded, Win XP now uses this as the computer/ system name and I cannot work out how to change it. I went to CTRL Panel | system and changed it there but it still shows on Win Explorer and system applications running????

Problem 2. When I left him, He had to reinstall some programs that did not work. He installed Norton’s Antivirus 2000. After that nothing worked very well. I unistalled it and got it all going again except: Can’t access My Computer. The desktop Icon does not work and you cannot access it from Win Explorer either. Also drive D: does not come up in Win Explorer. You can only get to it by Typing D: in the address bar or through an application you may be running. egrecently used files in word etc. From all other appearances D: seems to be working normally.

How do we get MY COMPUTER back and the D: on Win Explorer.
