Access weird index

We have an Access database that has just decided to go wacky. All of a sudden the Primary Key index is creating some odd numbers instead of autonumbering like it always has. Here is an example: “-1183110303”. I deleted the records that started appearing with these strange numbers but everytime I add a new record the autonumber does not use the next sequencel number. Help.
