accessing external hard drive

hi, my girlfriend just bought an external hard drive, the computer recognised it and the model etc. it’s windows xp btw. the computer though won’t let me open up the drive it keeps saying windows cannot access the device. you do not have appropriate permissions to access the device. please help and soon as i have to go at the weekend to get some data from her home computer.
