Add/Remove Programs

I am preparing a pc from which to dump a ghost image, by running all the updates, and removing and adding programs. I noticed that in the program files folder on the local drive, that alot of the folders of removed programs are still there. How does this affect the machine, if at all? Do i need to delete these folders as well?
