Additional Hardrive installation

I had a friend give me a spare hardrive to use in addition to the one I currently have. However I tried to install the hardrive and was unsuccessful. Now I can not recognize either the master or the slave drives. I have reset everthing to its original configuration and the original hardrive is not recognized. Any help is appreciated.
