Adobe Acrobat won’t load

I have downloaded several versions of adobe acrobat reader to a new dell machine that is only 1 year old with xp home. I cannot get it to open a pdf. I recently tried version 5.1 I get an error message “cannot load acrobat external window handler”. I have uninstalled and installed it several times. Dell 1800, 256K Ram
