ADSL modem as uplink for 3com Hub

I am having a hell of a time trying to connect a simple LAN network from a 3Com dual speed 10/100 16 Port Hub. The ADSL connects through a Alcatel Home Connect Modem/Router (whatever they call it) which has a RJ11 input conn & a RJ45 output connection which is going to the #16 port on the 3 com HUB (which is the uplink port). I feel as though I have tried it all w/o success. Wondering if anyone knows if the Alcatel ADSL Modem is compatible with the 3Com Hub, or if there is something else needed. Any help would be great.
