ATA Maxtor hard drive

I have a computer with a Maxtor ATA hard drive and I wand to do a repair on it. It has XP HOme but when I boot up with the XP CD rom it says that there is no hard drive there. How do I reinstall XP and how would I do repair on the file system. It boots up and says, device driver failed. IT sees the drive in the BIOS.
Any ideas?
