Audio icon gone from tray in Win98se

The audio icon that used to reside in the system tray has disappeared, and I can’t get it to reappear. I have gone to the control panel, multimedia, checked the box to “show audio icon in sys tray”, clicked apply and ok, but the icon never shows up. How do I get it back?
