auto-shutdown intermittent

On a new XP pc – for the past 5 or 6 months the machine has shutdown automatically as expected when choosing shutdown from the menu. Now the machine will appear to shutdown but the fan will continue to run. Press the power button and the machine boots up as expected. No configuration settings have been changed, in windows or the bios.

What should I look at to troubleshoot this?
