battery recognition in IBM Thinkpad R40

We ordered a replacement battery for the Thinkpad R40. We’ve now tried two different batteries and neither will work. The laptop doesn’t recognize that they are installed. Any ideas? Are the batteries “duds” or is there something we need to do?
