Beyond the basics of Web Site Design

I will soon complete training in web page/site production. I am looking for information and suggestions on how experienced web developers handle requests from clients that go beyound the basics of designing static web sites. Specifically, I need information on adding a guest book to track visitors, and in the future adding a database. I appreciate any suggestions or comments.
