Black error screen after upgrading RAM

Thanks for any help.
I have a Dell Vostro 1520. I took out the 2 2G RAM cards and put in 2 4G cards. The laptop runs fine as long as it’s plugged in, but if I unplug it (power source), it goes to a black screen and won’t boot.
Any suggestions??
