Blank screen

Windowss 98 machine

If this PC sits for about 20 minutes on screen saver or even with no screen saver and running scan disk or any other program it goes to a blank DOS screen with the cursor blinking in the top left hand corner of the screen.It does not respond to mouse or keyboard and needs to be rebooted to get back into windows.

Any ideas?
