Blue screen error

At startup I recieved this message:
Terminating thread due to a stack overflow problem. A VxD, possibly reciently installed, has consumed too much stack space. Increase the setting “MinSPs’ in system.Ini or remove reciently installed VxDs. There are currently 5 sps allocated.

What is a VxD, stack space, and MinSPs?
I tried to use misconfig to get to system.ini
but it said that it wasn’t working correctly.

I tried to use notepad but couldn’t find MinSP

Please list in order steps to take to eliminate this VxD problem, keeping in mind everything wants to keep freezing up.
