I have just moved my computer from winNT to win2000. I made a clean install as it is said to be more steady. I have two partitions on my hard drive which I wanted to be NTFS.
During the installation, everything was ok, but it just did not let me put NTFS on the second partition, I only could put FAT32. So I did.
Then I installed my different programs. Everything was fine.
I just wanted to put my second partition to NTFS. I formatted right-clicking on it, selecting Format with NTFS file format. The operation succeeded.
Later, I restarted my computer and it could not boot anymore: “NTLDR is missing”. I followed the instructions I found on Microsoft: creating a boot diskette with a boot.ini, a ntdetect.com and ntldr file. The boot.ini file was the following:

It did not work. Then Ireplaced “partition(1)” with “partition(2)” and it worked.
I could go back to win2000.
I checked on my C drive, these 3 files were not there anymore (by the way my system files are definitely on the C drive as my D drive has always been empty). I put them back on C:\. But I still could not boot my PC without using the diskette.
I tried both “versions” of boot.ini file on the C drive (that’s to say writing partition(1) and partition(2) ) but still does not work.
I also tried to reformat my 2nd partition the same way but putting back fat32. Unsuccessful.
Now, I think it was a very bad way to format the partition but it’s a bit late…
So if anyone knows how (or rather where) to make the change so that I do not need to use the boot disk every time I start my computer, and at the same time explaining me why it is looking for oot files on the 2nd partition….
