Boot Windows XP & Install from a DVD?

by teresaacourtney . Updated 19 years, 1 month ago

I have a big problem and don’t know if anyone can offer any solution.

I have an HP Pavilion 4040us that had XP SP-2 Home Edition loaded and it ran fine.

It seemed like the perfect time to get a good backup…so I purchased a backup program that also would let me make an image of my PC.

I installed NTI Backup NOW! Deluxe Edition, and made the Rescue DVD’s as it recommends, and
that ran fine…so I thought.

I shut down for the night and on restarting the next morning, I found that the CD-DVD RW drive in my PC no longer will read a CD…it just “ka-thunks” four or five times, then quits.

BUT…it reads & writes DVD’s just fine.

I rechecked my CD-DVD RW listing on NTI’s website and it’s listed there as a supported drive, but they have been silent on any suggestions for my problem, other than to uninstall the software & load again.

Well, not thinking ahead, I did an uninstall and rebooted, but guess what…the software came on CD!

Couldn’t reload the programs to try to repair the driver.

So, I tried to roll back the driver, but that did nothing. I tried going back using the Restore Point I created, but again, CD’s will not read. I tried “Go Back To Last Good Configuration” and System Restore…no help.

I thought of doing a Repair with my Windows Recovery Disk, but…it’s on CD!

The folks at HP will repair whatever is wrong…but they want $400.00+.

My last gasp was to reload the PC using the Rescue DVD’s. I followed the directions, and finally all 7 DVD’s recovered successfully. On restarting my PC though, I now only get a message…

“Missing OS or Unformatted Active Partition”

“Press Any Key to Boot Floppy”

So…Here I am…No Floppy…No CD function (other than one I have external with a USB) and no PC unless I boot it up with a BartPE DVD I made.

…any suggestions on what you might try would really be appreciated!
