Browser can’t see network when connected

I bought a new computer with 1 gig Athlon and SiS onboard NIC. My computer connects to the cable modem network, my browser says “website found, waiting for a reply” but it never goes any further. I have tried both IE 5 and Netscape. Any ideas how tomake it work?
