Browsing 95 machine from XP has stopped

by pchomeusers . Updated 24 years, 6 months ago

Hi,
We run a pretty small network. Using a Winnt 4.0 Server as PDC and a main File Server. We also have a Windows 95 machine that basically acts as a print server for one printer and a archive file server (which makes a backup unnecessary since changes are never made to these docs, they are reference only).
All ran fine and of course the famous Nothing Changed other than I changed a bad power supply on the 95 server. The protocol we use is tcp/ip. Now all the sudden an XP Pro computer cannot reach this machine. If I try to browse to it I get “You may not have permission, check with admin”. This is NOT a permission issue since I can goto another machine and have no problem browsing this 95 server using same username.

if I type in run \\win95server I get Unable to connect, Network path not found.

Now keep in mind the XP machine has absolutely no problem browsing other machines (i.e. the NT 4.0 file server).

I just don’t get it since nothing has changed. Funny part is I had this problem on my 2000 machine for the longest time but now it just cleared up on that machine and is occuring on an XP machine.
IP config looks good. I just thought maybe I should ping the win95server’s ip address but if that is successful that would be a DNS issue right? If a DNS issue why is it functioning properly when browsing to other machines. The Win95 server has no problems browsing the network.

Any ideas or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
D
